Georges Pichard

Georges Pichard (January 17, 1920 - June 7, 2003 in Paris, France) was a French comics artist, known for numerous BD magazine covers, serial publications and albums, stereotypically featuring partially exposed voluptuous women. Georges Pichard studied at l'École des Arts Appliqués in Paris. Later, he would return there as a teacher. He went into publishing, but in 1946 he switched to illustrating. He worked for various magazines, including Le Rire and Les Veillées des Chaumieres, and made his comic debut in 1956 with 'Miss Mimi' in La Semaine de Suzette. In 1964, he met writer Jacques Lob, with whom he created superhero parodies such as 'Ténébrax' (in Chouchou) and 'Submerman' (in Pilote), before entering the field in which he became famous - erotic comics. The first of this genre was 'Blanche Épiphanie', which he created with Lob for V Magazine in 1967. This was followed by 'Ulysse' in Linus (1968). Several of the series created by Pichard and Lob were later continued in other magazines, such as France-Soir, Charlie Mensuel and Phénix. In 1970, he created, together with writer George Wolinski, his most famous character: 'Paulette'. Many other round-breasted beauties followed her, like 'Caroline Choléra' (L'Écho des Savanes, 1976), 'Marie-Gabrielle' (Glénat, 1981) and 'Carmen' (Albin Michel, 1981). Pichard worked together with various writers, of whom Danie Dubos was one of the most interesting for her outstanding scenarios of among others 'Caroline Choléra', 'Lolly Strip' (Le Rire, 1966) and the non-erotic 'Bornéo Jo' (Charlie Mensuel, 1982). In addition, Pichard was present in Charlie Mensuel with 'Les Manufacturées' (script Feraldo) and the science-fiction story 'Je Réserve' (script Jean-Pierre Andrevon). With Andrevon he also created 'Ceux-la' for Editions du Square (1980). From 1978 he was present in Circus with 'L'Usine' and 'Les Sorcieres de Thesalie', and in B.D. with 'Alias'. He succeeded Magnus and illustrated the second volume of 'Cent Dix Pilules' in 1987, drew 'La Comtesse Rouge' for publisher Dominique Leroy (1985) and contributed 'Marlene et Jupiter' and 'La Belle Endormie' to magazine J'Ose (1987-88). Pichard adapted some of the world's famous erotic stories such as 'Mémoirs d'un Don Juan' by Guillaume Apollinaire (Albin Michel, 1991) and 'Le Kama-Soutra' by Vatsyayana (Dominique Leroy, 1991). With his series 'Madoline', 'Germinal' and 'La Religieuse', he was one of the main contributors to the magazine Love Comix, that started in 1993. Pichard's style is immediately recognizable: he draws tall, well-endowed women, whose starry eyes with excessive make-up give them a teutonian and gothic look. Apart from being a master of the erotic genre, Pichard also illustrated countless books and magazines, drew humor cartoons and made lithographs in his more than 40-year long career. He died in June, 2003.

Guido Crepax

Guido Crepax (born Guido Crepas; July 15, 1933 - July 31, 2003, Milan, Italy) was an Italian comics artist, who deeply influenced the European adult comics world in the second half of 20th century. He is most famous for his character Valentina, created in 1965 and very representative of the spirit of the sixties. The Valentina series of books and strips became noted for Crepax's sophisticated drawing, and for the psychedelic, dreamlike storylines, generally involving a strong dose of eroticism. Crepax was born in Milan, the son of cellist Gilberto Crepax (1890—1970); he grew up in the musical environment; the closest friend of his childhood was Claudio Abbado. Crepax began to work as a graphic artist and an advertisement illustrator while still studying architecture (he degreed in 1958), producing posters as well as covers for magazines (including the Italian edition of Galaxy), books and LPs. The latter were mainly for classical music and jazz, including Gerry Mulligan, Fats Waller, Charlie Parker, Louis Armstrong, Italian Jazz Stars, but also for more popular works like "Nel blu dipinto di blu" by Domenico Modugno. In 1963 he entered the world of comics, and two years later he created his most famous character, Valentina. Valentina Rosselli appeared for the first time in the N°2 of the Italian comics magazine Linus, as a secondary character in the series featuring her boyfriend, the art critic Philip Rembrandt, the superhero Neutron. Valentina, inspired by the silent film actress Louise Brooks, soon became the main character of the series, whose last episode was published in 1995. Valentina's stories are a weird mix of oneiric, science fiction, fantasy, espionage and (especially later) erotic themes. Apart from Valentina, Crepax produced other comic books featuring different heroines, including Belinda, Bianca, Anita and Francesca. The blonde Anita, inspired by the Anita Ekberg of Federico Fellini's movie La dolce vita. In spite of her name meaning "White" in Italian, Bianca had long black hair: she was featured in several books, including Crepax's version of Gulliver's Travels. Francesca's stories, about the life of a high school student, are unusual as they have no erotic connotations at all. Crepax also adapted to comics some of the classics of erotic literature like Histoire d'O, Justine and Emmanuelle. In 1977 he finished an adventure comic book, L'uomo di Pskov ("The man of Pskov"), followed one year later by L'uomo di Harlem, concerning the world of jazz in New York. Crepax's last work, Frankenstein, an adaptation of the novel by Mary Shelley, was published in 2002.

Robert Crumb

Robert Dennis Crumb (born August 30, 1943, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania), is an American artist and illustrator recognized for the distinctive style of his drawings and his critical, satirical, subversive view of the American mainstream. He currently lives in Southern France with his wife Aline Kominsky-Crumb. His family moved frequently during his childhood, and moved to Delaware in 1956 when his father retired after twenty years in the U.S. Marine Corps. His biggest influence during his youth was his older brother Charles, who loved comics and who co-wrote many of the comics they produced as children. After graduating from high school, Robert spent a depressing year at home, mostly drawing, and talking endlessly about the meaning of life with Charles, who never did leave home. He finally left for Cleveland in 1962 to live with his friend Marty Pahls, and soon found work with the American Greetings Corporation as a color separator. After a temporary breakup with Dana, Robert traveled to New York, Chicago, and Detroit during this acid-soaked period and created many of his future characters: Mr. Natural, Mr. Snoid and Angelfood McSpade. In January, 1967, Crumb suddenly left Cleveland. Crumb drew “Zap #1” and “Zap #0” in the fall of 1967 and sold them on the street in 1968 (out of Jesse’s baby carriage). So marks the birth of underground comics with Crumb as its most recognizable force. In 1970, Crumb began a five-year, on-again off-again relationship with Kathy Goodell, who lived in San Francisco. In the first few years of the decade, Crumb continued to traverse the country and draw. But by 1974, Crumb moved from what had become a commune in Potter Valley and settled down in Madison, California with his new girlfriend, Aline Kominsky (later to become his second wife). He stopped smoking marijuana at that time. He drew a “Mr. Natural” strip which ran in “The Village Voice” for about a year (later compiled as “Mr. Natural #3”). In the mid-eighties, Robert decided to let Peter Bagge (and eventually Aline) take over the job as editor of Weirdo so that he could spend more time doing his own comics. By the end of the 1980's, with suburban sprawl increasing, the Crumbs became disgusted with America and, at Aline's instigation, decided to leave. Robert exchanged some of his sketchbooks for their new house in the south of France. Crumb’s friend, Terry Zwigoff, filmed Robert and his family before they moved and the resulting documentary “Crumb”. Except for the occasional expedition to Paris or America, Crumb has nestled himself in the south of France, where he is hard at work on a long-term project illustrating the book of Genesis.
